Is Vertical a replacement for Final Surge?
It depends on what you need. Final Surge is a training log and workout-delivery platform built for coaches running a team or a coaching business: calendars, a structured workout builder, injury tracking, team messaging, and tools to sell plans and collect payments. Vertical starts from a different premise: instead of you building and adjusting every athlete's calendar by hand, Vertical's AI drafts it, schedules it, and adapts it as training progresses, so you spend your time coaching instead of building calendars.
How does "querying athlete data in plain language" work?
Instead of opening each athlete's log and reading their history, you ask directly: "Who has missed their long runs two weeks running?" or "Which athletes are ready for a load increase?" Vertical reads all your athlete data and answers in plain language, or flags something worth a look.
Can I build plans for my whole roster at once?
Yes. Vertical generates individualized plans for your entire roster simultaneously, lets you compare them side by side before assigning, and adapts each one automatically as the athlete trains. Final Surge lets you copy and edit weeks across a calendar, which is faster than starting from scratch, but you're still building and adjusting each athlete's training one at a time.
What are "AI sub-coaches"?
Vertical gives you a suite of specialized AI agents: a pacing specialist, a recovery advisor, a race-day planner, and more. When you're working through a specific problem for an athlete, you can consult the relevant sub-coach, see its reasoning, and decide whether to apply it. Final Surge doesn't have an AI layer; its strength is the manual tools (workout builder, calendar, PAIR injury tracking) a coach uses directly.
When is Final Surge still the better choice?
If you're running a coaching business and need team messaging, a social wall, injury reporting, or a marketplace to sell plans and collect recurring payments, Final Surge is purpose-built for that and has been for years. It's also genuinely inexpensive for team and high-school/college coaching, and offers a free tier for athletes. Vertical doesn't currently offer payments, a marketplace, or team community features; it's focused on the coaching itself, not running a coaching business around it.
Does Vertical work with athletes who use Garmin, COROS or Polar watches?
Yes. Vertical syncs directly with Garmin, COROS and Polar, so your athletes' data flows in automatically regardless of which of those three they wear. Final Surge syncs more broadly, including Garmin Connect and Apple Watch, but Vertical doesn't currently sync with Strava, which some Final Surge coaches lean on.
What does Vertical cost for coaches?
Vertical for Coaches is in early access. Join the waitlist and we'll reach out with pricing when we open the next cohort.
How does Vertical compare to Final Surge on price?
Final Surge prices by roster size: $19/month for a Starter package (1–5 athletes) and $39/month for a Pro package (up to 100 athletes), with discounted rates for high school and college programs and custom pricing above 100 athletes, per Final Surge's public pricing (June 2026). Athletes can use Final Surge for free, with an optional $6.58/month Premium tier. Vertical for Coaches is in early access; join the waitlist and we'll share pricing when we open the next cohort.
Can I bring my existing roster and training history over from Final Surge?
You can bring your roster over: each athlete's goals, event calendar, and current training block. It isn't a one-click import of years of logged workouts, though. Vertical's models work from an athlete's recent training and what you tell it about them in conversation, not from replaying an old training log. Most coaches find that faster than it sounds, since the context that actually matters (what an athlete is training for and how they're responding right now) is exactly what you'd talk through anyway.
Is Vertical accurate enough to trust with a whole roster?
Every plan Vertical drafts is grounded in the same research library that powers its athlete-facing coaching: 500+ peer-reviewed papers spanning exercise physiology, periodization, and recovery. Independent research on AI-generated training plans has found real accuracy gaps in general-purpose chatbots' coaching output, which is exactly why Vertical pairs the AI with a review step: you approve, Vertical drafts. That's by design, not a limitation we're working around.
